Overcoming Homesickness Through Joy: A Colourful Dance Competition at Gurukul Summer Camp

Jay Swaminarayan!

At the heart of our Swaminarayan Gurukul Summer Camp lies the commitment to not only educate and instill values in children, but also to nurture their emotional well-being. One of the most common emotions children experience at the beginning of a residential camp is homesickness. Being away from their families for the first time can often bring about feelings of loneliness and anxiety. However, through careful planning, love, and engaging activities, we transform this challenge into an opportunity for growth.

To help our students settle into the Gurukul environment and begin forming new friendships, we organized a Group-wise Dance Competition—an event designed to lift spirits, boost teamwork, and infuse the camp atmosphere with celebration.

This vibrant event saw enthusiastic participation from nine different groups. Each group, comprised of campers from diverse backgrounds and age groups, had spent the previous days preparing and rehearsing their performances under the guidance of their respective mentors. The process itself was full of laughter, coordination, and a lot of bonding. Dance, being a universal language of expression, turned into a medium for the children to forget their worries, express their joy, and truly begin enjoying the camp.

On the evening of the competition, the atmosphere in the hall was electric. The stage was lit, the music was cued, and the audience—comprised of fellow students, sadhus, volunteers, and mentors—was buzzing with excitement. As each group stepped onto the stage, they brought with them a unique theme and a burst of energy. From classical moves rooted in tradition to creative expressions choreographed with a modern flair, the range of performances was simply delightful.

The coordination among group members, their synchronized steps, and their enthusiastic smiles were all evidence of how far they had come in just a few days. It was not just about the dance—it was about teamwork, confidence, and expressing joy. It was heartwarming to see students who were previously shy or reserved, confidently take center stage and perform with zeal.

After all the performances were completed, the panel of judges—which included our camp sadhus and guest mentors—deliberated carefully. Judging was based on various parameters such as creativity, synchronization, expression, stage presence, and teamwork. After much discussion and cheering from the audience, the results were announced.

With great applause, Group No. 5 was declared the 1st rank winner of the dance competition! Their performance was praised for its coordination, expressions, and vibrant choreography. The members of Group 5 celebrated their victory with immense joy and pride, while other groups cheered for them sportingly, reflecting the spirit of unity and healthy competition we encourage at Gurukul.

But the celebration didn’t stop there. To recognize the hard work and dedication of all participants, and to further spread the joy of the evening, all rank-achieving groups were treated to a delightful ice cream party! The smiles on the children’s faces as they enjoyed their sweet treat together were truly priceless. The ice cream was more than just a dessert—it was a symbol of shared happiness, friendship, and the sweet success of stepping out of one’s comfort zone.

What began as a simple activity turned out to be one of the most memorable evenings of the camp so far. Children who initially missed their homes now felt a strong sense of belonging, camaraderie, and pride. The dance competition not only entertained but also helped create bonds that would last throughout the camp and beyond.

This event is a testimony to how thoughtfully crafted activities can play a significant role in the emotional and social development of children. At Swaminarayan Gurukul, we believe that education is complete only when it touches the heart, builds character, and fosters joy—and this dance competition was a perfect example of that philosophy in action.

As we continue with many more such joyful learning experiences in the days to come, we are confident that every student will leave this camp not only with new knowledge and skills but with memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.
