In 2012, after completing his post-graduate studies in London, Vishal Thakkar returned to India with dreams of building a successful career. His time abroad had given him exposure, confidence, and new skills, but he remained deeply rooted in his values and traditions. Every day, without fail, he wore his Tilak Chandlo, a mark of his faith in Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
Soon, Vishal began exploring job opportunities in India. He was thrilled when he was selected for an interview with Reliance Brands, a prestigious company that imported and sold international luxury fashion brands like Diesel and Hamleys. The position promised growth, exposure, and prestige — it seemed like the perfect opportunity for a young professional just back from abroad.
However, during the final discussion, the interviewer laid down an unexpected condition:
“You can join us, but you must stop wearing the Tilak Chandlo. It doesn’t create the right impression for our brand.”
Vishal paused. He felt the weight of the decision. On one hand, it was a dream job with an esteemed organization. On the other, it asked him to compromise the very symbol of his faith and integrity.
With calm conviction, he replied, “These are Indian brands sold in India. Asking me to remove my religious mark is not just a personal request — it is disrespectful to our traditions and values. I cannot compromise my faith for any job, no matter how prestigious.”
Vishal respectfully declined the offer. Many would have seen this as a setback, but he saw it as an opportunity to remain true to himself.
Within a short time, he found a better, more flexible role in the Telecom Sector — a company that valued his skills without asking him to compromise his beliefs. He continued wearing his Tilak Chandlo proudly, a silent reminder that integrity and faith should never be exchanged for convenience or approval.
This experience reinforced a timeless lesson for Vishal: Success that asks you to betray your principles is never true success.
Staying true to one’s values may require sacrifice in the short term, but it always brings blessings, respect, and the right opportunities in the long run.
Vishal stands as a shining example of what it means to be a True Gurukulite & a True Devotee of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
Shree Swaminarayan Gurukul is Proud of Vishal Thakkar.
