Defeat Kali Yuga is a question many people ask: “Until Lord Kalki comes to defeat Kali, what power do ordinary people have to overcome Kali’s influence?

There is an origin story of Kali as well. When the Mahabharata ended, and all the Pandavas left for the Himalayas, the grandson of Abhimanyu, King Parikshit, took the reign of Hastinapur. To check the happiness of the kingdom, the king sat on his chariot and started exploring all the streets of his kingdom. In one of the streets, he heard eerie sounds. He came near to explore it until he found out a Black Man beating an innocent cow ruthlessly. He got very angry seeing ADHARMA in his kingdom. He took out his bow and arrow to kill him, but he came into the refuge of the king. The king asked the Black Man, “Who are YOU?” The Black Man replied, “I am Kali, the yug after Dwapar Yug.” The king warned Kali not to stay in his kingdom until he is alive. Kali requested to give him 3 to 4 places in his kingdom, and he would not come out of those problems. So the king provided 5 places to Kali, which were the 5 traps of Kali.

The Five Traps of Kali That Help Us Defeat Kali Yuga

Defeat Kali Yuga

Kali Yug resides in Gambling. He believes in Luck, Chance and Speculation by ignoring efforts. For example, Casinos, Online Betting, Fantasy Games, etc.

If we strive to eliminate gambling, we gain the spiritual strength to defeat Kali, because Kali’s greatest weakness lies in numbers. When fewer people—or none at all—support his influence, his power naturally diminishes. Without followers to sustain his presence, Kali inevitably loses his hold.

By staying away from gambling and speculation, individuals weaken Kali’s influence and take a powerful step toward defeating Kali Yuga.

Consumption Of Intoxicants

Consumption of any Intoxicants is considered equivalent to drinking Alcohol. For example, Drugs, Smoking, Tobacco, etc. These are called intoxicants because they fog our thinking capabilities.

Avoiding intoxicants keeps the mind clear and disciplined, which helps a person maintain spiritual strength and gradually defeat Kali Yuga in daily life.

Killing or meat–eating for pleasure or profit is slaughtering. When we encourage meat production, animal cruelty, and violent crimes, then we are giving space for Kali Yug to acquire over Dharma.

Kali was grateful to King Parikshit for giving him 4 places to live in, but all these places were the worst places on Earth, and he was a part of it. So Kali asked the king for one more place where he could live, and it should have value. So King gave him one last place to live in.

Kali Yug resides in gold. The symptoms that we can experience from gold are greed for gold, hoarding wealth, and obsession with material possessions. All these experiences are because of the influence and residence of Kali.

When people reduce greed and attachment to wealth, Kali loses one of his strongest places to reside, making it easier for society to defeat Kali Yuga.

What are the impacts of indulging in the residence of Kali?

In the scriptures, there is mention of a family member of Kali. Kali has 3 children. And these 3 children will come into the community or the house of the people who indulge in the above activities.

So the children of Kali are:

Unnecessary fights, arguments and conflicts driven by ego, envy or misunderstanding. Not by Dharma or higher Truth.

Twisting truth for selfish gain–lying, cheating, bribery, manipulation, or injustice to achieve personal benefit.

Wickedness means knowingly acting against righteousness, harming others, and glorifying sinful acts.

There is also a divine leela of Swaminarayan that illustrates protection from Kali’s influence. During the Kalyan Yatra, when Nilkanth Varni was resting under a tree in the snow, the different Yugas approached Him.

Satyug said that its glory had faded because people no longer practiced penance and truth. Maharaj assured that He would raise saints who live with discipline and renunciation. This is reflected in the lifestyle of the saints of the Swaminarayan Sampraday.

Then Tretayug said that yajnas had disappeared. Maharaj promised to restore them, which is why the Shikshapatri instructs devotees to perform non-violent yajnas.

Next Dwapar Yug lamented the loss of devotion. Maharaj replied that He would build temples and revive loving worship, which led to the construction of six temples in Gujarat.

Finally Kali Yug pleaded not to be destroyed. Maharaj declared that He would establish Ekantik Dharma and guide people through the Shikshapatri. Those who follow it remain unaffected by Kali’s influence.

Kali is not defeated by weapons, force, or waiting for divine intervention alone — he is defeated by our daily choices. By avoiding gambling, intoxicants, adultery, slaughter, and greed, we withdraw the very ground on which Kali stands. This is the true power ordinary people possess. Through the path of Ekantik Dharma and by following the teachings of the Shikshapatri, we remain protected from the influence of Kali Yug. Thus, the victory over Kali begins not in the future, but within us, here and now.
